The 4Cs Guide

Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — what matters most when choosing a diamond. Our comprehensive guide walks you through each of the 4Cs so you can find the perfect diamond with confidence.
Diamond certification is based on the 4Cs - the universal standard used worldwide to assess diamond quality.
1. Cut
Cut is the most important factor affecting a diamond’s brilliance and sparkle. It measures how well a diamond’s facets interact with light.
Certified cut grades typically range from:
● Excellent / Ideal
● Very Good
● Good
● Fair
A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, appearing bright and lively.
2. Colour
Diamond colour refers to how colourless a diamond appears. Most certification reports grade colour on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light colour).
The closer a diamond is to colourless, the rarer and more valuable it becomes. Certification ensures accurate colour grading under controlled conditions.
3. Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of natural internal features (inclusions) or surface characteristics (blemishes).
Certified clarity grades include:
● Flawless (FL)
● Internally Flawless (IF)
● Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1, VVS2)
● Very Slightly Included (VS1, VS2)
● Slightly Included (SI1, SI2)
Certification ensures inclusions are graded consistently and transparently.
4. Carat Weight
Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not its size. Certification provides precise carat measurements, often to the hundredth of a carat, ensuring accuracy and fairness in pricing.
