Why Two D VVS2 Diamonds Can Look Completely Different
You've found two diamonds.
They're both 3 carats. Both D colour. Both VVS2 clarity. Both certified.
So why does one look absolutely incredible while the other looks… average?
This is one of the most important things to understand when buying a diamond:
Two diamonds with the same carat weight, colour and clarity can look completely different because those grades don't tell you how beautiful a diamond will be.
Cut, proportions, dimensions, facet pattern, light performance and even where the diamond carries its weight can dramatically change what you actually see.
At Southern Star Diamonds, this is why we don't choose diamonds simply by filtering a database for the highest specifications.
The certificate helps us understand the diamond. The diamond itself tells us whether it's beautiful.
What Does D VVS2 Actually Mean?
Let's start with what those specifications tell you.
D colour is the highest colour grade on the standard D-to-Z diamond colour scale. It indicates that the diamond falls within the colourless range.
VVS2 clarity means the diamond has inclusions that are very difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification.
Both are excellent specifications.
But neither tells you how much the diamond will sparkle.
Neither tells you whether an oval has a prominent bow tie.
Neither tells you whether a radiant has a beautiful facet pattern.
Neither tells you whether an emerald cut has distracting windowing.
And neither tells you whether a 3 carat diamond actually looks like a good-sized 3 carat diamond from above.
That's where individual diamond selection becomes important.
The Certificate Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
A diamond grading certificate is incredibly useful.
It gives us objective information about characteristics including:

Polish

Symmetry

Fluorescence

Proportions
But a certificate isn't a beauty score.
Imagine two 3.00 carat D VVS2 oval diamonds.
On paper, they may appear almost identical.
Put their videos next to each other and one might immediately appear brighter, more balanced and more attractive.
Why?
Because diamonds are three-dimensional optical objects.
Small differences in how they're cut can dramatically influence the way light moves through them.
Cut Can Matter More Than Colour and Clarity
If there's one characteristic we'd encourage buyers to pay close attention to, it's cut quality and overall visual performance.
A diamond sparkles because light enters the stone, interacts with its facets and returns toward your eye.
When those facets work beautifully together, you get the brightness, contrast, fire and scintillation that make a diamond captivating.
When they don't, portions of the diamond can appear:

This is why we'd generally prefer a beautifully performing E VVS2 diamond over an average-performing D VVS2 diamond.
The better specification isn't necessarily the better diamond.
Two 3 Carat Diamonds Can Look Like Different Sizes
This surprises customers all the time.
Carat measures weight, not visible diameter or surface area.
Two diamonds can both weigh exactly 3.00 carats while having noticeably different dimensions.
One might carry more of its weight underneath the diamond.
Another might distribute that weight across its face.
From above, the second diamond can therefore look larger.
This is often described as face-up size or finger coverage.
It's especially important when comparing larger lab-grown diamonds because once you're looking at 3 and 4 carat stones, relatively small differences in length and width can become noticeable on the hand.
That's why we always look at the measurements alongside carat weight.
Length-to-Width Ratio Changes the Entire Personality of a Diamond
Fancy-shaped diamonds don't have one universally perfect shape.
Consider an oval.
One customer might love a fuller, softer oval.
Another might want something noticeably elongated.
Both diamonds could be:
3.00ct D VVS2
Yet they could look like completely different rings once set.
The same applies to:

Ratio is therefore not simply a technical number.
It's part of the design of the diamond.
The Bow Tie Can Completely Change an Oval
This is particularly important with oval diamonds.
Many elongated brilliant-cut diamonds display some degree of bow-tie effect—a darker area running across the centre of the stone.
A subtle bow tie can simply contribute contrast and character.
A very prominent bow tie can dominate the appearance of the diamond.
And here's the important part:
You can't determine the severity of a bow tie from D colour or VVS2 clarity.
You need to look at the actual diamond.
Two D VVS2 ovals can therefore have almost identical certificates while one appears bright across its entire face and the other shows a heavy dark band through the centre.
We would choose the brighter, better-balanced diamond every time.
Radiant Diamonds Can Have Completely Different Facet Patterns
Radiant cuts are another perfect example.
Two radiant diamonds can share almost identical specifications while having dramatically different personalities.
Some have a highly fragmented crushed-ice appearance.
Others display larger, more defined flashes of light.
Neither style is automatically wrong.
Some customers genuinely love crushed ice.
Others want strong, distinct sparkle.
What matters is understanding what you're buying.
The grading report won't simply say:
"This radiant has the type of sparkle you prefer."
That's something that needs to be assessed visually.
Emerald Cuts Are Even More Dependent on What You See
Emerald-cut diamonds behave differently from brilliant-cut diamonds.
Rather than producing countless small flashes, their long step facets create broad flashes of light and the famous hall-of-mirrors effect.
This makes proportion and transparency particularly important.
An emerald-cut diamond can have outstanding colour and clarity specifications but still show areas of windowing where you can effectively see through the stone.
Another emerald with similar specifications might have beautifully balanced alternating light and dark steps.
Again:
Same carat.
Same colour.
Same clarity.
Completely different diamond.
Why Excellent Polish and Symmetry Aren't Enough
Another common assumption is:
"They're both Excellent polish and Excellent symmetry, so shouldn't they look the same?"
Not necessarily.
Polish describes the quality of the facet surfaces.
Symmetry describes how precisely the facets have been aligned and arranged.
Both matter.
But they don't tell you everything about the overall optical personality of the diamond.
This becomes particularly important with fancy shapes, where visual assessment remains critical.
Sometimes the Cheaper Diamond Is the Better Diamond
This is something customers don't always expect us to say.
The more expensive diamond isn't automatically the better choice.
You might compare:
Diamond A
3.05ct
D colour
VVS1 clarity
with:
Diamond B
3.01ct
E colour
VVS2 clarity
Diamond A has the higher specifications.
But Diamond B might have:

Better proportions

Better face-up dimensions

More attractive sparkle

A more desirable ratio

Better overall visual balance
If Diamond B looks better, we'd rather recommend Diamond B.
Even if it costs less.
Because you're going to spend the next several decades looking at the diamond.
You're probably not going to spend them looking at the certificate.
Do You Really Need D Colour?
D colour is exceptional.
But it isn't automatically necessary.
D is simply the top of the diamond colour grading scale.
Depending on the diamond shape, metal colour and individual stone, an E or F colour diamond can also appear beautifully colourless.
For many customers, the visual difference between adjacent high colour grades can be extremely difficult to appreciate without controlled comparison.
If choosing E instead of D allows you to select a diamond with noticeably better proportions or light performance, we'd often favour the better-looking diamond.
Do You Really Need VVS2?
The same principle applies to clarity.
VVS2 is an outstanding clarity grade.
But diamonds don't become more sparkly simply because their inclusions become increasingly difficult to see under magnification.
Once a diamond is genuinely eye-clean, moving significantly higher in clarity may provide very little visible difference to the naked eye.
This is why clarity should be considered alongside the entire diamond rather than treated as a competition to achieve the highest possible grade.
What Should You Compare Instead?
When we're comparing two apparently similar diamonds, we look beyond the headline specifications.
1. Dimensions
How large does the diamond actually face up?
2. Proportions
Is the diamond carrying unnecessary weight underneath?
3. Ratio
Does the length-to-width ratio create the shape we're trying to achieve?
4. Light Performance
Does the diamond appear bright and lively as it moves?
5. Facet Pattern
Are the reflections attractive and balanced?
6. Bow Tie
For elongated brilliant shapes, is there excessive darkness across the centre?
7. Windowing
Particularly with step cuts, are there areas that appear overly transparent?
8. Overall Balance
Most importantly:
Which diamond would you actually choose if the certificates were hidden?
That's often the most revealing question.
Why Diamond Videos Matter
High-quality videos can provide information that a grading report simply cannot.
When comparing diamonds remotely, we look for how the diamond behaves as it moves.
Does light travel throughout the stone?
Are there persistent dark areas?
Does the facet pattern look balanced?
Does the diamond appear bright from edge to edge?
Is the shape symmetrical and attractive?
This is particularly valuable when purchasing an engagement ring online.
You don't necessarily need to physically hold every diamond you're considering.
But someone should be evaluating more than just the specifications.
Why We Don't Automatically Recommend the Highest Specification
It would be easy to simply recommend:
D colour.
VVS1 clarity.
Largest carat weight.
Highest price.
But that isn't necessarily how you find the most beautiful diamond.

Sometimes the winner is the higher-specification stone.
Sometimes it isn't.
And that's exactly why individual diamond selection matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is D VVS2 a good diamond specification?
Yes. D colour and VVS2 clarity are both exceptional grades. However, they don't guarantee excellent cut, proportions or light performance, so the individual diamond should still be assessed.
Can two D VVS2 diamonds have different prices?
Absolutely. Carat weight, dimensions, proportions, shape, cut characteristics, manufacturer, availability and other market factors can all influence price.
Can an E VVS2 diamond look better than a D VVS2?
Yes. If the E VVS2 has better proportions, facet pattern or light performance, it may be visually more attractive despite having a colour grade one step lower.
Is VVS1 noticeably better than VVS2?
In most cases, the difference relates to characteristics viewed under magnification rather than something you'll readily notice with the naked eye. Both are very high clarity grades.
Why does one 3 carat diamond look bigger than another?
Because carat measures weight rather than visible size. Differences in depth, shape and proportions can result in different face-up dimensions.
Can you identify a bow tie from a diamond certificate?
Not reliably. Bow tie is primarily a visual characteristic, which is why videos and individual assessment are important when choosing elongated brilliant shapes.
Should I choose the diamond with the highest specifications?
Not automatically. Choose the diamond with the best combination of specifications, proportions, dimensions and visual performance for your preferences and budget.
The Bottom Line
When two diamonds appear identical on paper, don't assume they're identical in reality.
D VVS2 tells you something important about a diamond. It doesn't tell you everything.
The certificate is part of the selection process.
The dimensions matter.
The proportions matter.
The facet pattern matters.
The sparkle matters.
And ultimately, what the diamond actually looks like matters most.
